The Riviera also hosted the 2017 United States Amateur Open Championship, the most prestigious USGA amateur golf event in the world. Golf Digest commented that the quality of the event at The Riviera reinvigorated and saved major Amateur golf competitions in the United States.

Eventual champion Doc Redman of Clemson University Eagled hole #35 with a 60-foot putt, then came from behind to tie Doug Ghim of the University of Texas on the final hole. Redman then took the Championship on the first playoff hole, and now plays on the PGA Tour.
